Who Can Help With Credit Report Errors for Free?
You do not have to buy a subscription to challenge inaccurate information. The right route depends on whether you need to understand the report, correct a specific entry, or get advice after an unresolved dispute.
If you need your reports
AnnualCreditReport.com is the official source for the free reports available through the nationwide bureaus. The FTC explains the free-report program, including the bureaus' weekly online availability. Checking your own report is different from applying for a loan. CreditHound's report checklist helps you save the information you will need.
If you found a specific mistake
Use the bureau's official dispute process. FTC guidance and the CFPB's dispute instructions explain what to include. The bureau's reinvestigation is free. If you choose mail, postage and optional delivery services can still cost money.
Write down the exact error, why you believe it is wrong, and the supporting record. Keep copies. You can do this yourself; you do not need to hire CreditHound or any other service to exercise your rights.
If you need a lawyer and cannot afford one
Use the Legal Services Corporation directory to locate civil legal-aid organizations. Eligibility, capacity, and the types of cases handled vary.
The National Association of Consumer Advocates directory can help you find lawyers who handle credit reporting. A directory listing does not mean a lawyer will take your case or that every service is free. Ask about the consultation, costs, fee arrangement, and who will represent you.
What CreditHound does
CreditHound is a brand owned by LeadsAI LLC, a marketing and technology company. Our free check helps you describe a possible error and gather relevant information. If your file qualifies and you consent, it may be shared with a partner law firm that independently decides whether to offer representation.
We work with a limited number of partner firms. Our founder is a licensed attorney who owns one of those firms; the relationship is explained in our site disclosures. You remain free to choose another lawyer. CreditHound is not a law firm, does not provide legal advice, and does not create an attorney-client relationship.
How can attorney help have no upfront fee?
Some firms use contingency arrangements or evaluate claims involving statutory attorney-fee provisions. The FCRA includes fee provisions for successful actions under § 1681n and § 1681o. That does not mean every reporting mistake requires a company to pay or that all lawyers use the same terms. Read any engagement agreement, including how fees, expenses, and recoveries are handled.
CreditHound itself never charges consumers. Starting a check does not obligate you to hire a firm.
What should I have ready?
Your report, a description of the item, supporting records, prior disputes and responses, and any denial notice. If you are unsure which type of problem it is, that is a reasonable place to begin. See our guides to mixed files, identity theft, false deceased reports, and disputes that stayed wrong.
